Got Matcha Green Tea Review

wp-1456524286778.jpg

Matcha is a form of green tea that has long been used for almost 1,000 years for its health benefits in Japanese culture and is 10x stronger than traditional green tea. Matcha is a form of  green tea leaves that are grown in the shade over long periods of time and ground down to a fine powder. The interesting aspect of drinking Matcha is that you actually drink the powder when you brew a cup of tea. With normal tea, we’re used to steeping the tea at various temperatures, depending on the type of tea, for a certain amount of time to “brew” the tea and infuse the water with the tea’s nutrients. With Matcha, you scoop out about a teaspoon of the powder and stir it into heated water, add your milk or milk alternative of choice, and drink it as is! By drinking the entire green tea leaves in powder form, you’re taking in all of the antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fiber that are inherent in the tea leaves.

I’ve been drinking Matcha for years ever since I heard about the amazing health benefits of Matcha, which include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Increase in Longevity
  • Aids in Heart Health
  • Reduces risk of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Decreases Neurodegenerative diseases, due to its high polyphenol content
  • Lowers blood pressure/hypertension
  • Prevents tooth decay
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Increases energy production
  • Improves skin health
  • Reduces stress and anxiety due to a high content of L-theanines
  • Heightens concentration to increase overall clarity and focus

Matcha provides a different type of energy lift, in comparison to black tea or coffee. Black tea or coffee will give an initial boost in energy, however this boost will quickly dissipate and you’ll be left feeling deprived and in need of another boost. Matcha provides a slower, steadier form of energy that is completely jitter-free where you’ll feel more awake, able to focus, and will be more alert, overall throughout the day. If you’re trying to cut back on your caffeine consumption, Matcha is VERY helpful in this endeaver (and this is coming from someone who used to need about 1,000mg of caffeine a day to get by).

Since you are consuming the whole leaf of green tea in the form of Matcha, it does contain about twice the amount of caffeine that is found in regular bagged green tea. Matcha contains about 68mg of caffeine. Caffeine, in moderation, is not harmful, especially in the form of Matcha because it’s a naturally derived stimulant that is completely devoid of fillers, sugars, artificial ingredients, and chemicals.

It’s incredibly important to buy ORGANIC Matcha, especially since you are consuming the entire leaf. I recommend making sure all of your tea is organic because non-organic teas are loaded with chemicals and pesticides. There has been a lot of debate in the natural community about certain tea brands…actually most tea brands…having bleached and chemical-laden tea bags! So, even if the tea inside the bag isn’t harmful, the cheap tea bags they’re using to encase their tea that is also being seeped into your water as you brew your cup of tea is harmful to your health because these contain carcinogenic (cancer causing) ingredients! Loose-leaf tea is usually the way to go to avoid this dilemma, however, there are a few safe brands to purchase from that offer un-bleached, chemical-free tea bags to make bringing your tea with you a bit easier.

The brand Got Matcha? has a variety of organic Matcha tea blends, such as Matcha with Cacao (featured in my photo above), Matcha with Mint, Matcha Pumpkin Spice, Matcha with Lemon, etc. Each blend has a small amount of a coconut derived sweetener to add just a touch of sweetness to your blend. You can of course buy Matcha as a pure blend without anything added to it, but sometimes the organic earthiness of traditional matcha can be a turn-off for some people, especially people who aren’t used to drinking tea regularly.

I actually stumbled upon the Got Matcha brand on Groupon years ago and used their voucher to get a big discount off their tea blends (which was a big help because their blends aren’t cheap). I tried the Pumpkin Spice blend (AMAZING!), Matcha and Mint (Incredibly good iced during the warmer months), and the one I’ll be discussing today: Matcha Cacao (which tastes like hot chocolate with some spices).

Got Matcha offers a membership where if you sign up to become a member, you save 40% off their tea blends and can choose different sized options of each blend. If you don’t become a member, unfortunately their prices are just too steep in my opinion. But, if you become a member and use their discount code, their prices are still high (because Matcha in general is expensive, especially organic matcha), but it’s reasonable and the taste is unparalleled.

For all of the health benefits mentioned (and for so many reasons not mentioned in this post, due to the fact that an entire book series can be written about the Elixir of the Immortals), I personally feel that drinking at least one cup of organic matcha every day is worth the price.

In the blend I’ve been drinking all winter, Cacao has been added to the matcha mix. Cacao is essentially the unprocessed form of Cocoa, which means that it is jam packed with all of the health benefits and nutrients found in dark chocolate. It’s great for your hair, skin, and nails and is also great for anxiety and depression! Additonally, it’s wonderful for your heart health and for warding off cancer.

How I like to drink my Got Matcha Cacao:

  • 1 heaping teaspoon of Matcha powder
  • heat water to 175 degrees
  • 1 teaspoon raw, local honey (optional)
  • 1 heaping teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 2-3 drops Clove doTERRA essential oil (optional)
  • Add 10 oz of water to a nutribullet cup and blend
  • Top with unsweetened vanilla coconut milk

***Note: You cannot just use any essential oil brand to add to food/drink recipes because not all essential oils are processed equally. Only two brands are approved for internal useage: doTERRA and Young Living. To learn more about doTERRA, please see my email information below.***

This is a wonderful morning energy booster or afternoon pick-me-up. Believe me, I’m one of those people that is completely useless in the morning before I have some form of caffeine (sad, but true). This does the trick for me!

As  a side note, I’ve found that Matcha is incredible at warding off regular headaches. I suffer from chronic headaches and migraines (I usually have a headache every day of the week) and as soon as I drink my Matcha, the headache is at the very least more manageable, or has alleviated entirely, depending on the severity of the headache. It’s not simply the caffeine content in the Matcha, either, because I’ve tried caffeine by itself to ward off headaches and it doesn’t work for me. I believe it’s the anti-inflammatory content in the Matcha that works its magic.

    1. Oh, that’s interesting! If you drink it with cool water, make sure you’re steeping the Matcha with a little bit of hot water to ensure that you’re infusing the water with all the nutrients and then add cooler water and/or ice to make it the way you like it. I also love Iced Matcha! Maybe you’d like the latte version with vanilla coconut milk 😊 I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my skin since I started drinking Matcha every day again! My skin went through a really bad phase for a while and it’s finally getting back to normal. You reminded me that Matcha is most likely helping! Thank you for helping me make that connection! I’m glad you drink this amazing tea, too! If you like the pumpkin spice idea, you can always try adding pumpkin spice seasoning to your Matcha to spice it up! 💜😄

      1. Thanks for the tips! 🙂 I should definitely experiment more with Matcha 🙂 Have you tried using neem powder on your face as a face mask? I love it! It helps me get rid of the blemishes and also helps keeping my skin balanced and more hydrated. Oh, btw. i remember you wanted to write me an e-mail, did you? Just wanted to make sure it is not lost somewhere in my inbox 🙂

      2. I never tried neem powder, but that’s a great idea! This week I’ll be posting my DIY face mask recipe since I just restocked my ingredients. I haven’t emailed you, yet, but I plan to! Thanks so much for keeping an eye out for me ☺💜
